Welcome to the Wive's Group Page
Each year they adopt a charity and raise money for it with coffee mornings, tabletop sales and socials. At Christmas, they entertain the over 60s in the congregation providing a delicious meal and seasonable entertainment - the picture shows a scene from last year’s production.
Saltaire Methodist Church Wives Group
FUN, FELLOWSHIP, FUND RAISING, AND FOOD not necessarily in that order!
The Wives Group was started in 1960 and is still a thriving group today.
It used to be called ‘Young Wives’, but as some of us never left and just got older we dropped the ‘young’ when our lower age range became 50+! We meet fortnightly on a Wednesday at 8.00 p.m. usually in people’s houses, but occasionally in Church.
We have a very varied programme of speakers. Sometimes we go out for the evening, to take in a bit of culture, go for a walk, or to eat (probably our favourite pastime!) During the year we work for the Charity chosen by the current president with such things as a Sale at Shipley Library, a Charity Dinner with a Speaker, a Barn Dance and an in house Bargains Night. We are now raising in excess of £1,000 each year. In the year 2007/2008 we have raised £1,750 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Every December we hold a dinner with entertainment for the older members of our church and other invited guests. This takes the form of a home cooked Christmas Dinner followed by entertainment by some of our group. When we were younger we were very energetic with a lot of singing, dancing etc., but more recently we have resorted to humour as our mainstay, and presented our version of ‘The Calendar Girls’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Snow White and Some Dwarfs’ our most recent shows. We even cajoled our Minister to take the role of Snow White, much to the surprise of the audience!
We would be delighted to welcome new members. Come and see for yourselves. For further information contact Lesley Hainsworth on 01274 598198 firstname.lastname@example.org
